I always use the smooth elastic hair bands as rubber bands since I find they don't dry out like real rubber bands do. Since they come in a variety of sizes for a variety of braids and ponytails, you can often find small ones that won't snap easily and will take some abuse. Plus they're more colorful that way and you can organize stuff by color, i.e. all chargers are in pink bands, all power cords are in red, etc.
